The aim of ATLS is to teach a simple systematic approach to the management of trauma patients through interactive tutorials, skills teaching and simulated patient management scenarios. The ATLS® course was developed by the American College of Surgeons and has now been adopted in over 60 countries worldwide.

ATLS student status lapses after four years, and it is recommend that this be renewed within six months of the date of expiry. Students are no longer able to reverify on the final day of the three-day programme. They either need to take the full two day programme again or attend a one-day reverification course. Reverification course can be taken only within six months of provider status expiry.

Content

ATLS teaches a safe reliable method for immediate management of the injured trauma patient. ATLS is a multidisciplinary course enabling a standardised language of trauma care across the specialties.

Target Audience / Suitability

Eligible students must undertake the course no later than six months after their ATLS provider status has expired (ie no more than four-and-a-half-years must have elapsed since their last ATLS student course).
